Therapy for Religious & Values-Oriented Adults

Psychotherapy that respects your religious values, cultural background, and personal commitments

For many people, religion is not simply a background detail. It shapes how they understand relationships, family, sexuality, morality, responsibility, community, and the choices they make.

I welcome clients whose religious values and practices are an important part of their lives. Therapy does not hiding those beliefs or setting them aside. Instead, we can explore emotional and psychological concerns while taking seriously the values and beliefs that matter to you.

My goal is not to tell you what you should believe or how you should live. It is to help you better understand what you are experiencing, what may be driving recurring patterns, and how to make thoughtful choices that fit both your psychological needs and your values.

Areas We May Work On

Religious and values-oriented clients may come to therapy for many of the same reasons as anyone else, including:

Complex trauma and difficult childhood experiences

Understanding how early relationships and experiences may continue to affect emotions, self-worth, safety, and adult relationships. Sometimes the source of trauma may involve a religious authority figure, institution, or community, which can complicate a person’s present relationship with religion, trust, and belonging.

Dating, relationships, and intimacy

Working through recurring relationship patterns, uncertainty, attraction, conflict, closeness, or difficult decisions. Dating and relationship concerns can also involve religious expectations, differences in values, or tensions between personal needs and religious commitments that deserve to be understood rather than oversimplified.

Unwanted or complicated attractions and identity questions

Exploring attractions, sexual concerns, or identity questions without assuming in advance what those experiences must mean or what conclusions you should reach. When sexual feelings, attractions, or behaviors conflict with religious values, the resulting questions can be especially confusing and emotionally difficult.

Pornography and compulsive sexual behavior

Understanding the emotional patterns and triggers that may contribute to repetitive sexual behavior, while helping you develop greater understanding and control when that is what you want. Religious or personal reasons for wanting change can be taken seriously rather than dismissed or minimized.

A Respectful, Exploratory Approach

Clients sometimes worry that therapy will require choosing between psychological understanding and their religious commitments. I do not see those as inherently incompatible.

My approach is exploratory rather than prescriptive. We can look carefully at your history, relationships, emotional reactions, patterns of coping, and current concerns while remaining respectful of the religious and cultural framework through which you understand your life.

I have extensive experience working with Orthodox Jewish clients and am also comfortable working with people from other religious backgrounds who want their beliefs and values to be treated respectfully in therapy.
